Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) is a voluntary global certification that ensures the welfare of sheep and the land they graze on. Developed by Textile Exchange, the RWS focuses on two main areas: animal welfare and land management. It ensures that wool comes from farms that meet strict criteria regarding sheep treatment, including the prevention of mulesing (a harmful practice), and sustainable land practices that protect biodiversity and soil health.
The RWS requires farms to be audited by an independent third-party certification body, and it includes traceability throughout the supply chain to verify that the wool meets the required ethical and environmental standards. The certification helps consumers and brands confidently support responsible wool production, contributing to animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and the integrity of the wool industry.
RWS certification supports brands and companies in meeting consumer demand for more sustainable, ethically sourced products, and promotes transparency and accountability in the wool supply chain.
